With Diego Costa ruled out of the top-flight’s west London derby on Sunday, the spotlight falls on Loic Remy and Didier Drogba to take the attack to Queens Park Rangers on their own turf.
Although he has yet to announce who will start the game up front, Jose Mourinho has been speaking about both players in the run up to the visit to Loftus Road.
Remy began last weekend’s victory over Stoke with Diego Costa on the bench before being introduced at half-time, only for Drogba to join the action soon after when injury forced our topscorer off. It was Remy who netted the winner, as he had done shortly after coming on as a sub in the previous game at Hull, adding to the reputation the 28-year-old has built during this season of delivering for Chelsea whenever called upon.
‘That is because he works fantastically well even when he is not playing,’ Mourinho explains.
‘Even week after week when he was on the bench and Diego was starting matches, he pushed himself always to the limits to be in condition to answer when the right moment arrived.
‘Some players when they are not playing, the level of focus and commitment and training goes down, so after that when the team needs them they are not there for the team.
‘Remy is a professional with a great profile, every time working very hard and when he was playing, whether scoring or not scoring, he was always there for the team. Now he has scored two goals in two matches and he makes some important points.
‘I like him because he can score goals and that is important for a striker but at the same time, his movement is always good and when the team is not in possession, he knows it is better when the team defends with 10 players and he has that contribution.
‘Also when you build the squad, if a player can play in more than one position that is a plus and he can play also wide on the right or wide on the left.’
On the subject of his squad and the strikers in it, Mourinho makes it clear there is no pre-determined pecking order when it comes to team selection.
‘Since day one when we spoke and Remy was at QPR, he knew we needed a top squad to try to win trophies and he was ready for this new situation in his career which is not to be a clear first-choice.
‘He didn’t come as a number two. He came knowing that we have a squad with important players and cannot guarantee positions. This is not being a number two. Diego did well enough when he was playing to keep his position, but who knows, if in the next matches Remy performs very well, maybe he makes the situation difficult for Diego when he comes back.’
The same can no doubt be said of Didier Drogba if he enjoys a run of top form in the coming games. The contract the Ivorian signed on returning to Chelsea in the summer is for one season only but nothing is decided about the future yet.
‘We have to think and speak and find out what he wants but that is not a problem,’ says Mourinho.
‘I like [to happen] what he likes. There are people during their career who earn the right and power to make decisions and not wait for others to make decisions for them, and that puts him in a great position.’
In the build-up to tomorrow’s local derby, Mourinho also had words for another in fine form who scored in the past two games, Eden Hazard and the continuing debate over the Belgian’s chances of being named Player of the Year.
‘With what he is doing there shouldn’t even be a debate,’ insists the Chelsea manager.
‘If somebody throws other names onto the table, it is because they want to sell newspapers or want clicks on links, or want to throw some sand into the eyes of the people because he has been by far the best player in the Premier League all season.’
