Speaking to Chelsea’s official email newsletter this week, Hazard shared his thoughts on what such an accolade would mean.
‘I want to win collective trophies first,’ he said.
‘I know if I win these with Chelsea then maybe I can get the PFA Player of the Year in England or the Ballon d’Or. But when I see Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, I know I have to score more goals. These awards are not my objective, I just want to play; if I get the awards, it’s good for me, but it is not the first thing.’
The 24-year-old Belgian is well on course with his stated aim of scoring more goals. By netting in the last two games he has matched his 17 from last season with, if selected (and he has started every league game so far this campaign), another eight matches left to play.
‘We are confident as a team,’ Hazard told the newsletter.
‘We are first in the Premier League and we are just taking it game after game. We played beautiful football in our last match against Stoke, and we deserved to score three or four, but the most important thing was the victory. We just want to bring the trophy back to Stamford Bridge.’
