Our Under-19s will face Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Youth League final on Monday after a convincing semi-final victory over Roma in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday. The young Blues won 4-0, with all four goals coming in the second half as Charlie Colkett and Tammy Abraham netted either side of a brace from Dominic Solanke.
After the game, goalscorers Colkett and Abraham (pictured top) reflected on a wonderful team performance and a win that means our Academy will now play two finals in three weeks, with the FA Youth Cup campaign culminating in a two-legged tie with Manchester City later this month.
Speaking to the official Chelsea website, Abraham said: ‘We’re over the moon to get the win. We had a few problems on Thursday getting out here with a flight being cancelled but we were determined to make sure we didn’t use that as an excuse.
‘We were playing well in the first half but we just had to keep on working and take our chances. That was the message Adi [Viveash, Under-19s manager] gave us at half-time. When I came on, he just told me to go and get my goal. I was speaking with Kasey Palmer as we were warming up and we both just wanted to get on and make a positive impact, which we did.’
The two combined for Abraham’s 83rd-minute goal, the striker’s 34th of the season keeping him one ahead of Solanke in the individual scoring stakes.
‘We spoke the other day and said we’re just going to both keep going and try to help each other get 40 goals,’ said Abraham. ‘That will benefit the team most so that’s our aim. We’re going to need to up our game again for the final against Shakhtar but we’ll go out and give it our all.’
A deflected strike from Colkett (who is pictured below centre with Jeremie Boga) two minutes after the restart opened the afternoon’s scoring and the midfielder reckons sharing the scoring responsibility throughout the team is a key feature of the side’s success in Europe this campaign.
‘I’m very pleased to have got five goals in this competition,’ said Colkett. ‘It’s something I’ve been trying to work on all season and it’s been going well for me. It’s great for us as a team to have everybody chipping in with the goals. Dom and Tammy are scoring a lot but we have a lot of players who can score goals and it’s crucial for us to share that load.
‘I got a bit of fortune with the deflection but sometimes that happens. Izzy Brown did great in the build-up and he put in a real captain’s performance today from start to finish.
‘We’re confident now going into the final. We played a strong Roma side and scored four while keeping another clean sheet. We have bundles of belief that comes from all the players and staff, especially Adi. It’s great to be in another final and hopefully we can lift both trophies in the next few weeks.’
Our Under-19s will face Shakhtar in Monday’s final at the Colvoray Stadium in Nyon, Switzerland. Kick-off is at 3pm UK time and the game is being screened live on Eurosport, with Chelsea TV showing the game in full at 11pm along with exclusive interviews. There will be coverage throughout the day on our Twitter feed @chelseafc
